Episode 31: Chasing Civility Over Silence In The Age Of Rage - Pillar 4

I’ve been trying to lean into what’s been happening in society and culture as we unpack our 6 pillars.

This episode is unpacking Pillar 4: We chase civility, not silence. We reject the false choice between conviction and kindness. We can disagree fiercely, but with respect and a commitment to finding common ground.

Let me tell you, choosing civility is usually harder and will cost you more than choosing silence. But it is the MORE REWARDING choice.

I believe I chose civility over silence when I posted a prayer for President Trump after the assassination attempt last month. That cost me followers, but I don’t regret it because seeing the humanity in someone who went through something traumatic was the right thing to do, rather than staying silent to keep my follower count up.

So how in the world do we make the hard choice to respectfully disagree while still engaging in conversation? Here’s a few ideas:

  • Think before you speak.
  • Don’t assume.
  • Seek out shared values.
  • Take stock of the voices you’re paying attention to.
